A Home Exercise Program (HEP) is a routine that patients complete at home or away from physical therapy. Every HEP is unique to a patient and includes a combination of exercises, stretches, or movements. HEPs reinforce the work/progress that is completed during each visit with a therapist and is updated throughout the course of care. Eventually, a HEP will assist and support the transition for one to independently manage a condition. Simply said, in the beginning (of therapy), a HEP will help you heal faster and, in the end, it will help you continue to stay pain-free!

While some patients may not be familiar with exercising at home, others have very busy lives and struggle to find even a few free minutes. Nevertheless, home exercises are the foundation of an overall successful physical therapy program. One could say the HEP is up to fifty percent of the reason you will achieve better outcomes. So the more you do your HEP, the better results you will have!

Every patient at St. Clair Physical Therapy will receive a HEP. They are unique to your case and history. Typically it’s given to patients during their first couple visits of physical therapy. HEPs come in many forms (printed, on our app, emailed, etc.). Whichever format will encourage you to complete it, we will provide it!
